UL Fears Central Sprinkler Product May Malfunction in a Fire

Published: March 31, 2000

The Los Angeles Times reports that a widely used automatic fire sprinkler manufactured by the same company that had to recall another sprinkler model in 1998 may not operate in a fire, according to Chicago-based Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Some glass-bulb sprinklers produced by Central Sprinkler Co. leaked and failed to work at required water pressures in tests by UL, the nation’s largest testing organization. The devices also failed tests by FM Global, a commercial and industrial property insurer based in Johnson, R.I.
