UL Launches Alarm Company Search Engine

NORTHBROOK, Ill.

UL has launched an online search engine that allows
commercial and residential customers to find UL-Listed
security and fire alarm companies. Using the UL Alarm
Finder site, users can search for companies based on
parameters using a zip code-based system such as distance,
type of alarm needed and manner of response.

The site, at HREF=http://www.ulalarmfinder.com>www.ulalarmfinder.com,
went online this week. Even without any publicity, Isaac
Papier, general manager of UL’s Security & Signaling
business unit, told Security Sales & Integration
that the Web site has been a hit.

“It’s packed. I’m really surprised,” Papier says. “We’re
getting 1,100 hits a day with people searching for alarm
companies before we even publicized it.”
One of the best parts for alarm companies that are UL-
Listed are they don’t have to do anything to get a listing
in the search engine. UL-Listed companies are automatically
entered in the engine, and the site also provides
information for companies wishing to be UL-Listed. By
August, Papier says that for a fee, UL-Listed companies
will be able to add a hyperlink to their company’s Web site
within its listing in Alarm Finder.

“For an alarm company, this can be a lucrative hot lead
generator because the UL site itself gets well over a
million hits a month so it’s a broad range of potential
customers,” says Papier, who adds the customers who reach
the companies through Alarm Finder will already come in
with the knowledge that company has stood up to UL’s
qualification process. “There’s a trust that if UL sends
you off to a particular alarm company, it is a strong
affirmation of their qualifications.”

The Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) is one of the
prime backers of the new site, and each CSAA member company
is identified in the search engine with a CSAA logo. UL
says its new site will especially come in handy in
communities that enforce the national fire alarm code, NFPA
72, as all UL-approved companies must comply with it.
