UL Pledge to SIA: Our Services Will Be Improved

ALEXANDRIA, Va.

UL has sent an open letter to the Security Industry Association (SIA) pledging to improve proficiency and productivity of its services.

SIA Director of Technology Mark Visbal and President Bill Gorski met with UL’s leadership during its recent annual meeting to register SIA members’ concerns over UL service delivery timing and to seek a mutually agreeable resolution. As a result, UL pledged to work more closely with SIA and ensure their services are more customer-focused.

The letter, penned by UL’s Jerry Stricker, vice president, fire and security operations, states UL has been “retooling its Security and Signaling (S&S) Operations to better meet the changing needs of the industry and our customers.”

For several years, Stricker writes, staffing levels in UL’s S&S Engineering Operations remained below optimal capacity ever since a corporate reorganization was initiated about five years ago.

“While this action largely achieved its intended goal of better focusing our capabilities, it also yielded fewer engineers just as UL864, 9th Edition was being developed,” Stricker writes.

UL has embarked on a “long-term commitment” to identify and address capacity and process constraints, in part, to ensure all UL engineers assigned to S&S are sufficiently trained and supported to perform engineering investigations. Several initiatives are being implemented to achieve better productivity, Stricker writes.

“UL fully acknowledges past issues and wants every S&S customer to rest assured that appropriate actions are being taken,” he writes.
