The United States has disrupted a plot against Pope Francis ahead of his six-day tour of the US, according to Rep. Michael McCaul, head of the House Homeland Security Committee.
Francis begins a six-day tour of the U.S. on Sept. 22, where he will make stops in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City.
“We are monitoring very closely threats against the pope as he comes into the United States,” McCaul told ABC’s “This Week.” “We have disrupted one particular case.”
A particularly challenging aspect of Francis’ visit is his tendency to wander in public spaces, something that has McCaul “concerned” about plans to keep Francis safe in the U.S.
“The pope is a very … He likes to get out with the people and with that comes a large security risk. … But as that date approaches, I think we’re all very vigilant to protect him as he comes into the United States.”
Francis’ stop in Washington, D.C. will consist of a visit to the White House, a papal parade and a public appearance on the West Front of the Capitol.
