In an effort to clear recreational drones from U.S. skies near airports, federal regulators said on Monday that recreational drone users will have to register their drones with the government.

The basic details of the registration system are still being ironed out, according to U.S. officials, but they concluded swift action needed to be taken to counter the surge in sales of the drones that are interfering with air traffic, according to The Washington Post.
Federal Aviation Administration rules state drone owners cannot operate their aircrafts higher than 400 feet or within five miles of an airport without permission. The FAA said there have been more than 100 close calls with drones and planes a month.
The hope of the registration system will be to make owners think twice about where they’re flying their drone and that they could be held accountable for an accident, if the registration number can be recovered following an incident.
