The United States Postal Service (USPS) will soon equip its mail carriers with panic buttons.
Last year, there were more than 400 assaults on postal workers nationwide. Additionally, more than 5,700 U.S. postal employees were attacked by dogs in 2014, CBS News reports.
The attacks prompted USPS officials to issue out new mobile devices to more than 230,000 mail carriers. The devices will feature a panic button, as well as GPS technology that will transmit carriers’ locations to their supervisors every minute.
The new devices will also allow supervisors to send warnings to postal workers, similar to what USPS did during the recent unrest in Baltimore.
Among the safety features, the new devices will also allow customers to get notifications on their packages in real-time.
