UTC Fire & Security, a division of United Technologies Corp. and a provider of fire safety and security solutions, announces the opening of a new engineering research and development center at the company’s headquarters in Farmington. The center’s areas of focus are to develop tools, practices and work standards that improve productivity across the company’s global engineering organizations, as well as to targetrapid prototyping and the development of several new products.
“This center offers us the opportunity to create an engineering center of excellence, to focus on organic growth opportunities and to develop technologies that can be applied across all of our product lines,” says Tom Gillis, vice president of engineering with UTC. “The security side of our business does not currently have a large product base as we are primarily service-oriented. This facility will enable us to develop new capabilities and products in market areas that we have targeted for future growth.”
UTC Fire & Security’s new main design development facility has already hired 15 of the 30 engineers it plans to employ. The company expects the center to be fully staffed by the end of July.
According to UTC, the company will continue to rely on the United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, Conn., as well as the Kidde Research facility in Colnbrook, United Kingdom for its advanced product research initiatives.
