Vast Majority of Americans Say Home Security System Should Alert Authorites, Study Finds

An online survey found 93% of Americans want their security system to contact authorities in the event of a burglary or fire.

PHILADELPHIA — A recent survey has found 93% of Americans say it’s important for their security system to alert authorities, as well as themselves, when there is an incident at their home, such as a burglary or fire. In addition, 63% of Americans say self-monitored security systems are not as safe as professionally-monitored systems.

The study was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of LivSecure, a self-installed, smart home security solution and a division of My Alarm Center. The survey was conducted in February 2016 among 2,114 United States adults 18 years and older.

In addition to the above findings, 81% of respondents say it’s important for them to access their security systems remotely, either through a computer, tablet or mobile device, which validates integrators’ push to mobilize monitoring of clients’ homes and businesses.

Smart home technology is popular, but the survey shows that homeowners want more than a ‘smart thing’ when it comes to protecting their home and family,” said Amy Kothari, president and CEO of My Alarm Center. “Homeowners want assurances that help will arrive when their family needs it, and professional monitoring alerts first responders in case of an emergency.”

In tune with the smart home movement, it was found that 72% would like the option to integrate a security system to control home functions like thermostats and lighting.

Nearly half of Americans (49%) say they are open to installing a DIY home security system. However, there is a discrepancy between those homes with children under 18 and those without (57% vs. 46%, respectively).
