Video Surveillance: ASIS San Diego Helping Local Police Department With Body Camera Program Donation
Group has donated a combined $6,000 since April, and money will finance about 12 cameras for CVPD.
SAN DIEGO — ASIS San Diego has made an additional $1,000 donation to the Chula Vista Police Department’s body camera program. In April, the group donated $5,000 to the program.
The money will be used to supply additional officers with body cameras allowing them to record incidents and crime scenes with video surveillance technology while on duty.
“As with any emerging technology, body worn cameras can be expensive and challenging to deploy and manage effectively,” said Vern Sallee, captain for support operations at the Chula Vista Police Department. “Thanks to public/private partnerships like this, the Chula Vista Police Department has been able to leverage this technology successfully and deploy cameras more quickly than we could have otherwise done. This donation will directly help line-level police officers as they serve the citizens of Chula Vista by improving the documentation of police contacts and accountability.
“Thanks to organizations like ASIS, the Chula Vista Police Department will continue to be on the leading edge of progressive policing well into the future.”
Other departments around the nation have recorded 40 to 50% fewer complaints against officers when body cameras are used, according to ASIS.
Sailee said the donations will finance about 12 of the department’s more than 120 body cameras.
“This was something our group believed was very important,” said Sara Santana, chair for ASIS San Diego. “Part of our mandate is to support safe and secure communities and the CVPD body camera program does just that.”
The cameras record both video and audio, and officers are required to turn them on prior to any anticipated enforcement activity.
