PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla.
Published: January 8, 2004

Viisage will expand the use of facial recognition and database technologies to include other Florida law enforcement agencies thanks to a contract extension.

The Department of Justice in Pinellas County, Fla., has granted Viisage $734,000 to continue with a partnership that allowed its sheriff’s office to use facial recognition technology in law enforcement.

The third phase of the project will integrate the Pinellas database with other Florida agencies, giving the state’s law enforcement greater consolidated recognition and search capabilities.

Kicked off in 2002, the project implemented an image capture system at the Pinellas County detention center, visitation center and courthouse.

The contract amendment also calls for several improvements to the current system, including more efficient creation of photo lineups and advanced backup capabilities.
