The Virginia Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (VBFAA) has dropped its chartered state association status and ended its relationship with the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA). According to the NBFAA, the Virginia association cited increased membership dues fees by the NBFAA among other issues for the association break-up.

As a result of the move, members of the VBFAA will no longer be granted automatic membership in the national association. However, they still have the option of joining the NBFAA separately or limiting their membership there and ending their membership with the state association.

Virginia joins Florida, Massachusetts and New Hampshire as other state associations that have recently dropped their chartered status and broken ties with the NBFAA.

In a statement, the NBFAA says the increased dues are necessary to fund the association’s efforts on behalf of the industry. “In order to continue to promote, protect and enhance the industry and our member companies, it has become painfully obvious that we are at a crossroads, facing a decision we have put off far too long – to increase member dues,” the statement read.

At the start of the year, the NBFAA announced it would only accept chartered state associations (CSAs) as members and end existing agreements with affiliated alarm associations (AAAs) by Dec. 31.
