Vivint Solar Expands Leased System Offering to Hawaii

PROVO, Utah — Vivint Solar will now offer its leased solar power systems in Hawaii, the company announced this week.

Started in October 2011 by Vivint, the home security and automation provider, Vivint Solar installs solar panels atop of homeowners’ rooftops with its own technicians. Through the company’s power purchase agreement, customers agree to buy power generated by the solar panels at a lower cost than a typical power bill. In exchange, Vivint designs, installs and maintains the system with no out-of-pocket costs, according to a press release.

Vivint Solar initially launched in New Jersey and Massachusetts. After receiving strong feedback from customers, the company decided to offer its services in other parts of the country. A report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which cited that power prices in Hawaii have increased almost 18% in the past 10 years, prompted the company to expand its footprint there.

“Because Hawaii is among the leaders in the nation for providing homeowners a seamless and efficient solar integration process, the state was a natural next step for us,” Vivint Solar President Tanguy Serra says. “By using our solar service, the people of Hawaii will be able to rely less on traditional energy sources and rely more on the clean solar power their homes generate, and will be saving money in the process.”
