WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Brooke Erickson didn’t set out to make a career in the security industry, but she jumped at the chance to become senior director of learning for PSA Network three years ago before recently adding a marketing component to her responsibilities.

Here’s more about her career path in her own words as part of our ongoing celebration of International Women’s History Month.

Security Sales & Integration: How did you get into the security industry?

Brooke Erickson: I’ve been in the security industry for nearly three years now, and though my background in learning and development could have fit into many fields, I’m grateful it led me here. This industry not only protects assets but ultimately safeguards people, and that sense of purpose truly resonates with me.

Since joining PSA, I’ve recently taken on the added responsibility of overseeing our marketing team—a role that’s been both exciting and enlightening. It’s allowed me to explore creative ways to make the security sector more attractive to new talent and showcase the significant impact we have in protecting individuals and organizations.

Combining my passion for education with marketing has broadened my perspective on how we shape both professional development and the industry’s image.

SSI: Have you encountered any difficulties or obstacles in your security industry career?

Erickson: Absolutely. Breaking into security as a learning-focused professional required a rapid assimilation of technical knowledge and insight into complex market dynamics. Keeping training programs updated amid ever-evolving technologies is a steep learning curve. Yet, by partnering with industry experts, adapting my curricula, and embracing collaboration at every level, I believe I’ve been successful in navigating these challenges.

My goal is to always surround myself with skilled individuals, give them a voice in their respective areas, and amplify that voice. Each obstacle has reinforced the importance of continuous learning, resilience, and strategic thinking—qualities that define both the security industry and my work within it.

SSI: Whom would you point to as the most influential and helpful mentors in your career? What did they do to help you?

Erickson: I’m fortunate to have a network of PSA colleagues and industry leaders who guided me from day one. One of the most influential is my current leader, Candice Aragon, who gave me the greenspace and empowered me to make key decisions—an approach that has helped me grow tremendously.

I also draw inspiration from fellow Power 100 nominees—like Victoria Hayes, Alaina Meyer, and Marissa Vacek—whose achievements continually motivate me to push boundaries.

On a day-to-day basis, I am influenced by my direct reports—Mary O’Sullivan and James Gallagher on the learning side, and Michaela Austin and team on the marketing side—consistently elevate my perspective and leadership. Whether we’re brainstorming new strategies, refining educational resources, or brainstorming creative campaigns, their dedication drives my own growth.

SSI: What is your proudest career accomplishment?

Erickson: The year 2024 was an incredibly fulfilling year for me. I was recognized with the SIA RISE 25 on the RISE award, and included in the Power 100 by WISF for the first time.

These achievements validated my commitment to education and marketing within the security sector, shining a light on the teamwork behind initiatives like PSA University, specialized training paths, and leadership workshops—programs that drive resilience and innovation for our integrators.

Seeing firsthand how these efforts equip security professionals to thrive—and ultimately help safeguard communities—brings me immense pride. I cherish these recognitions as a testament to the power of strong learning frameworks, effective marketing, and a shared mission.

SSI: What do you love most about working in the security industry?

Erickson: I love the dynamic and collaborative spirit of this field. There’s an unwavering focus on protecting people, property, and data—causes that spark genuine purpose. It’s incredibly fulfilling to develop “cutting-edge learning programs” that empower integrators, all while using marketing tools to raise awareness of the industry’s critical work.

Whether I’m building robust technician training or brainstorming campaigns to attract fresh talent, I’m energized by the knowledge that our efforts go beyond organizational ROI and ultimately contribute to community well-being.

SSI: How can the security industry become even better?

Erickson: Depending on your expertise, there are countless ways to continue elevating the industry. But from my learning and marketing perspective, I believe the security industry can thrive by fostering a holistic culture of continuous learning and innovative marketing.

We need to keep refining educational offerings for an evolving landscape, while also amplifying outreach to attract the next wave of diverse, passionate professionals. This means cultivating mentorship programs, showcasing real-world impact, and highlighting the vast opportunities for meaningful, purpose-driven careers.

Embracing fresh perspectives—especially from those in the field, such as technicians—is crucial. With unified efforts and a focus on education, the security industry can remain resilient, people-centric, and forward-looking in its mission to protect everyone.
