WorldCom reports it has employed Salient Systems Corp.’s digital surveillance technology to monitor activities at its Web server data centers. Salient’s product is a PC-based system called iView and replaces traditional videotapes and recorders by transmitting surveillance video over the Internet or an intranet. Users of the iView system can log onto their computers at any time to view live video shot by CCTV cameras. WorldCom provides the Internet colocation services at data centers around the world and uses the iView system along with biometric hand scanners and electronic key systems to control access and monitor traffic in highly secured environments. Timothy Dowse, senior manager of security integration and networks at WorldCom’s Ashburn, Va., office says, “I looked at numerous companies that have digital recording and went with Salient because of cost, features and ease of use. It had everything we needed for a great price.” The system enables users to control pan/tilt/zoom cameras with the aid of a mouse, allowing them views they might not otherwise have. WorldCom manages one of the largest wholly owned Internet protocol networks in the world and operates in more than 65 countries with annualized revenues of more than $20 billion.
