Young Girl Allowed to Embrace Pope Francis Despite Security Measures
Pope Francis gave girl permission to approach his vehicle during parade.
Countless people packed the streets of Washington D.C., on Wednesday as Pope Francis’s Procession rolled through, with most satisfied to simply get a glimpse of the pope or offer a wave.
But not so for five-year-old Sophie Cruz.
During the parade, Cruz tried to approach the pope’s vehicle but was deterred by secret service. Pope Francis saw the little girl and motioned for her to approach him. Security then carried the child towards the pope, who embraced her with a hug and a kiss.

Cruz, whose parents are Mexican immigrants fighting to stay in the country, also handed Pope Francis a letter detailing her family’s struggle. The letter asks the pope to speak with President Obama and Congress on immigration reform and about legalizing her parents.
“Everyday I am scared that one day they will take [my parents] away from me,” her letter reads.
