In publicity stunts to promote the Z-Wave Alliance of home automation manufacturers, Mariusz Malkowski has controlled his smart home a few times from the peaks of Mount Everest, most recently in a demonstration that coincided with the International Security Conference (ISC) West event less than two weeks ago.

CE Pro, SSI‘s sister publication, has learned that Malkowski was safely rescued via helicopter after a massive earthquake hit Nepal and spawned a devastating avalanche on Everest, killing at least 18 climbers.

We are told Malkowski was “just above” the avalanche when it occurred, and that he safely descended the mountain to be returned to Kathmandu via helicopter.

Malkowski is technical services manager at Sigma Designs, the owner of Z-Wave technology. Several Z-Wave Alliance members financed his Everest climb, known as the Fibaro Mount Everest Challenge after its lead sponsor, a maker of Z-Wave sensors and compatible home automation systems.

Fibaro has maintained updates of Malkowski’s journey on its “Fibaro Everest” Facebook page.
