Leica Geosystems’ Sensor Combines LIDAR, Video, Thermal Imaging

The BLK247 by Leica Geosystems is a sensor that provides situational awareness for 3D surveillance, identifies security threats and provides real-time alerts.

HEERBRUGG, Switzerland — Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, a global leader in digital solutions, has developed the “BLK247,” which the company says is the first 3D reality capture sensor for surveillance.

The Leica BLK247 is said to be able to tell the difference between still and moving objects, detect various changes in both sunlight and darkness, and frame critical areas with digital fences while guaranteeing total privacy.

The BLK247 also greatly enhances situational awareness within restricted or high-security spaces, while reducing the need to constantly monitor walls of security screens or smart building dashboards, according to the company.

The capture sensor uses a combination of artificial intelligence, 3D digital fencing, edge computing and LiDAR-enabled (light detection and ranging) change detection technology to provide situational awareness for 3D surveillance, identify security threats and provide real-time alerts for both expected and unexpected changes.

“We understand that security professionals are often pushed to the limit in terms of situational awareness, and that it can be difficult to catch everything that may go wrong in a busy or sensitive environment,” says Carl-Thomas Schneider, vice president of business development at Hexagon Geosystems. “The BLK247 is designed specifically to help security and surveillance teams by providing a level of situational awareness that cannot be achieved through human eyes and ears alone. It will help create safer and more secure spaces worldwide, providing peace of mind for security professionals and the public alike.”

These capabilities make the BLK247 well-suited for protecting public spaces across transportation, smart buildings, hospitals, schools and museums, for example. The sensor fusion technology elevates situational awareness and alerts security professionals to unauthorized activity as it’s happening.

Leica provides the following real world examples of how the BLK247 supports a variety of industries:

Transportation: Detects items left behind and unauthorized intrusions resulting in increased security and reduced delays.

Optimized warehouses and autonomous factories: The obstacle detection and volume assessment features support increased throughput and the ability to optimize capacity.

Public buildings and safe cities: The 3D digital fencing capabilities create digital barriers that can be applied to areas or objects such as stadiums, government offices or works of art.

Leica is getting ready to release the solution and is expected to make an announcement in the near future. Check out the video below for more information.
