The 30 Top Technology Innovations of 2019

The security dealer/integrator channel is predicated upon new or unique products and those that support their smooth and profitable implementation. Find them in SSI’s Top 30 Technology Innovations of the Year.

The 30 Top Technology Innovations of 2019

For security dealers and integrators, staying a step ahead of today’s never-more-intense competitive environment means not only having to offer the latest and greatest products and solutions, but also implementing the slickest tools to facilitate fast, error-free deployments and the most intelligent business software to optimize operational efficiencies.

Imperative as well is aligning with the sharpest technology, sales and administrative partners to not only deliver at a high level but to also be able to rely on the unwavering support to do so on a consistent basis.

Those critical success aids come in myriad forms, sizes and complexities. And from a products and tools standpoint, as with most current leading-edge technologies, the best options increasingly emphasize software-enabled feature sets as opposed to hardware reinventions.

While the devices remain essential with exciting new introductions, refinements and enhancements that run the gamut from entirely new categories to ingenious twists on timeworn offerings, it’s the arrangement of the 0s and 1s that is breaking the most ground.

Such programming is at the forefront of unique capabilities and useful services as well as extending the field life of hardware via remote updates, diagnostics/troubleshooting and remediation.

These are the key trends sweeping through the electronic access control, fire/life-safety, intrusion detection and video surveillance sectors and are thusly reflected in Security Sales & Integration’s Top Technology Innovations of 2019.

This annual list cites products and resources that allow dealers/integrators to realize potential benefits that encompass fulfilling the industry’s mission of providing superior security and safety; more effectively running their business; optimizing installations, systems monitoring and service; heightening profitability; and growing customer bases.

Launched more than a decade ago, the Top 30 Technology Innovations of the Year is more than a typical product awards program (the industry has more than enough of those). It does not involve submissions for eligibility, fees, judging biases or vendor favors. It also is not limited to products alone as services or any instrument that can muster better outcomes is fair play.

However, the most intriguing element is that the selections are flagged by SSI’s unbiased technical editors and their many decades of in-the-trenches security experience. Longtime SSI contributors and columnists Paul Boucherle (Business Fitness) and Bob Dolph (Tech Talk) have each tabbed 15 items spanning a spectrum of smart and savvy installing contractor implements.

Boucherle’s commercial enterprise background manifests in his choices ranging from Cloud storage to gun detection to cybersecurity, with an eye on the corporate end user as well as the integrator. Dolph, a renowned installation and technical expert, gravitates toward system components and infrastructure, with a particularly keen eye on inventive and intuitive tech tools. He is also dialed into the connected home.

“Major movement in DIY, MIY and DIFM [do it for me] has the industry approaching a true tipping point,” Dolph says. “With an estimated 10 million-plus nonmonitored alarm systems in the U.S., dealers must work harder to embrace and monetize these opportunities with new technologies. What’s more, monitoring facilities need to be flexible in providing professional services to enhance these technologies. All need to become more proficient in providing customers with more complete and standardized smart home environments.”

There’s some food for thought while perusing this year’s list. Congratulations to those comprising 2019’s SSI Top 30 Technology Innovations, from which security pros can check off their holiday lists and exploit to grow in 2020.
