The 30 Top Technology Innovations of 2017

Not  counting those who just fell into it and went with the flow, there are three areas of attraction that mix with varying degrees of aptitude and steer people to carve out a career for themselves in the electronic security industry.

One is they want to make a difference in the world by helping to reduce the loss of lives and property. Meet the crusader. Two is they are drawn to the business or investor side of it being an in-demand and growing industry. Meet the entrepreneur. Three is the technology, products and solutions. Meet the gearhead.

At first glance, Security Sales & Integration’s Top 30 Technology Innovations would appear to be geared toward the gearhead. While those types will no doubt eat it up, these offerings are just as compelling for crusaders to be heroic and entrepreneurs to be more profitable.

Besides, most security practitioners embody at least some of all three profiles anyway. And if variety is the spice of life, then this year’s Top 30 picks add up to being one spicy meatball!

Those who are married to a routine, tend to adhere to a narrow portfolio of products and services, and are averse to change may want to shield their eyes because the 2017 selections run the gamut of security and security-related possibilities.

However, those with a little vision and openness to diversifying will be captivated by a wealth of opportunities ranging from cybersecurity to anti-terror to situational awareness to A/V to new vertical markets to environmental solutions to IT infrastructure and much more.

Once again SSI columnists Paul Boucherle (Business Fitness) and Bob Dolph (Tech Talk) have each identified 15 items that strike a formidable mix. Boucherle tends to focus more on access control, video surveillance, integration and even end user-oriented solutions.

Dolph, on the other hand, favors intrusion detection and fire/life- safety systems with an especially sharp perspective on installation tools and testing gear, and even sprinkles in some DIY-oriented fare.

That is not to say they do not individually venture out into the full spectrum of technologies. They both independently tab anything (limited to one entry per brand) deemed worthy based on its value, relevance or interest to security contractors.

While most if not all other security industry award programs require candidates to submit entries (usually for a fee) and/or are linked to some agenda and subject to bias, for more than a decade SSI’s Top 30 has stood apart for its impartiality and credibility.

Thus, the listed vendors should be rightfully proud and crow about their inclusion. And dealers and integrators can pick and choose their holiday shopping lists, and make New Year’s resolutions to deploy those tech innovations throughout 2018.
