Celebrate SSI’s 40th Anniversary With These Classic Cartoons

In honor of SSI’s 40th anniversary, take a stroll down memory lane with these classic cartoons from the publication’s days as Alarm Installer & Dealer.

As we close the books on Security Sales & Integration‘s 40th year this month, let’s take one more look back to the 1980s when, under the oversight of then Alarm Installer & Dealer magazine Founder Bob Bargert published an amusing industry-themed cartoon each issue month.

Longtime readers no doubt fondly remember those illustrated moments of levity, which were contributed by Joe Lanier, whose son Chris Lanier currently serves as president of the manufacturer’s rep firm LRG.

Several of those golden cartoons are revived in slideshow format here as a tribute to both SSI‘s and Lanier’s legacies. Joe Lanier, 81, has long since retired but was kind enough to provide us with the following background on his second life as a security industry cartoonist …

“My mother was an accomplished water color artist, but what little talent I inherited leaned toward doodling in school. I later served in the military air police, followed by law enforcement work. Then the grass looked greener in the burglar alarm biz, so I became an installing dealer. Later jumped the fence to the wholesale supply side. That was followed by a field sales slot with Moose Products, and later the old FBI firm. Those companies sold to Aritech and Pittway, but I was fortunate enough to establish my own independent sales rep company for 10 years prior to retiring. I was able through most of these backgrounds to enjoy cartooning as a part time hobby with sales to some police and security trade journals. I especially developed a friendship with security publisher Bob Bargert, and he was kind enough to regularly publish my efforts.”
