We have reached the point where the majority of people own smartphones. In fact, the devices can be found in 80% of households in the United States, with consumers owning 27 million more smartphones than they did the year prior, according to the Consumer Technology Association.
We live in an age of instant gratification. Consumers want to be able to instantly change the temperature of the room without having to leave the comfort of their couch. Who wants to walk across the room to adjust the thermostat when you can be binging the next great Netflix show?
Consumers now expect everything to be compatible with their smartphone. Evolving from the days of recording video footage on tapes to storing them on a DVR was a major milestone for the industry. However, we are quickly moving beyond that.
Having to take the time and effort to go to a computer to review video footage now feels like a hassle. With the proliferation of the Cloud, that is something that can easily be done from anywhere with a smartphone.
I’m sure that there are many security professionals out there that have a large list of reasons why DVRs and NVRs are superior to a phone app. However, to many stubborn Millennials, convenience trumps all.

I think we all know who’s buying these systems and using the apps and it’s not the youngest generation that isn’t in the position of power to have these technologies. That was an illogical pot-shot and frankly Steve, you can do better.
