Alula Pro Dealer Roundtable: How to Navigate the ADT/Google Partnership, COVID & More

Leading industry voices react to the ADT/Google partnership, COVID-19 challenges and opportunities, and discuss how the industry will evolve over the next decade.

Last month, Google and ADT announced a partnership that sent shockwaves through the tech and smart home security industries. Whenever there’s a big tech collaboration within the professionally installed space, doubt is raised about the future of the professional installer — will this integral piece of the industry be cut out of the equation?

To obtain insights from industry experts, Alula hosted a roundtable moderated by SSI Editor-in-Chief Scott Goldfine, featuring Alula Vice President of Product Marketing David Mayne, Ackerman Security Director of Operations Brian Lavelle, MacGuard Security Advisors President Kirk MacDowell and Unyte Home’s Kevin Copeland.

During the roundtable, panelists examine how the smart home security industry is reacting to “The Second Wave of Big Tech” in light of the Google/ADT partnership news.

“The partnership with ADT really highlighted a few things … it’s the value of the professional channel and the feet on the street, and the technical leadership that is really necessary to make that connected home/connected business experience valuable,” Mayne explains during the roundtable. “And we know that coming out of the industry, but I think this was recognition that Google, who has played around in devices getting into homes and played around in trying to launch security offerings, really values that professional channel.”

They also discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic is posing both challenges and opportunities, and discuss how the industry will continue to evolve and what it might look like in five or 10 years.

“Let’s not underestimate this millennial generation. They’ve grown up with nothing but automation in their hands, and this is just a component of their lives as we know it … they’re the ones that are going to be buying these homes, they’re the ones that are going to be continue to adding in all these services and offerings,” says Copeland. “That’s where we’re going to see growth and you got to be able to address that market in such a way that they see value. Because they’re buyers and they’re going to be the generation that continues to push us forward.”
