Teledyne FLIR Security at ISC West 2023: Multi-Spectral Cameras and Next-Gen Sensors

The FLIR team is eagerly looking forward to talking with ISC West attendees about its products and opportunities in the marketplace.
Published: March 6, 2023

ISC West 2023 will be held March 28-31 at the Venetian Expo in Las Vegas. Ahead of this year’s show, SSI heard from Matt Strautman, Teledyne FLIR Security Director of Global Business Development, Security, about what the company will be showcasing at ISC West, its value proposition and more.

What is a leading product or offering your company is showing off at ISCW this year, and what makes it unique or special?

Teledyne FLIR Security offers everything from end-to-end advanced solutions to single sensors. Historically, we are most known for our thermal cameras. More recently, we have established ourselves as providing best-in-class sensors. While continuing to advance in our thermal offering, we have incorporated visible cameras, radars, radiometric cameras and gas detection into our fixed camera portfolio. Our sensors paired with the right software provides customers more information and better situational awareness of their facilities.

The multi-spectral cameras continue to get a lot of attention from our customers. What started as a single offering in our pan-tilt family has turned into three different pan-tilt options and a fixed camera as of today. Traditionally, customers would look to thermal to help detect potential threats in environments that had inadequate lighting or challenging environments. With the multi-spectral cameras, customers not only get this, but they are able to get potential forensic information from the visible sensor.

Our latest multi-spectral product is the FH Series-ID. This camera is a fixed mount solution that includes our most recent thermal sensor, a 4K visible imager, and our CNN-based analytics. With this camera, you can not only improve your ability to detect potential threats, but the visible camera will provide you details to hopefully identify your target. Since it’s been available, the FH-Series ID was a finalist in the IFSEC Security & Fire Excellence 2022 Awards and the Intersec 2023 Awards.

Any other products or offerings that would you like to highlight?

Along with multi-spectral solutions, we are seeing a push for sensors to help improve a customer’s overall situational awareness. Radars have become a big advantage in this space. Our new R-290 radar not only can detect human targets out to 200 meters, but when paired with our multi-spectral DX pan-tilt camera, it can accurately track a target within the field of view of the radar. Both of these products can communicate GIS data to each other to allow for seamless tracking.

What else is new or noteworthy about the company for 2023?

We are excited to introduce next generation visible sensors later this year. Beyond new products, we have an incredible team. We are thrilled that our very own Maria Cambria, vice president of sales enablement for solutions, will be inducted into Security Sales & Integration’s Hall of Fame during ISC West. Maria is being recognized for her dedication, leadership and impact – not only across FLIR, but across the industry.

What is your company’s overall value proposition to security dealers/integrators? Why should they do business with you?

When it comes to perimeter security, customers are ultimately looking to increase situational awareness. Due to the amount of infrastructure needed and its high cost, perimeter security systems can drive up the cost of the overall system. If a system is designed right, it will not only work in the intended manner, but you should not have to continuously add cameras to fill blind spots. One of the major advantages to FLIR is that we have a large offering when it comes to sensors. We have the tools to properly design systems to eliminate blind spots and provide complete coverage. If budget is a concern, my advice is to start with your most critical area and add products as your budget allows. Because of the technology advancements over the last decade, sensors that may have been considered too expensive have become more affordable and reliable.

What do you see as some of the top opportunities in the marketplace right now?

There has been a consistent push for technology in security to be multi-purposed. As a standalone system, security usually does not generate income. If technology used in the security system could have an operational use, it often increases the budget and scope of work. We anticipate seeing more projects where customers deploy multiple types of thermal cameras on one video management system, with some cameras designed for surveillance and others purpose-built for early fire detection to improve asset monitoring.
