Published: October 31, 2000

EDINBURGH, Scotland—There is a growing number of false alarms that can be attributed to hairspray. Officials from both the Lothian and Borders fire departments in Scotland confirm that spraying hairspray or perfume near a smoke detector can trigger an automatic false alarm. Recently, firefighters rushed to an apartment building, where the alarm culprit was none other than a woman who had used hairspray. Due to the false alarm, local fire officials evacuated 100 tenants.
