Beefed-Up Systems Integrator Track on Tap at ASIS 2013

ASIS International’s 59th Annual Seminar & Exhibits will fill the halls of McCormick Place, located minutes from downtown Chicago, Sept. 24-27.

CHICAGO — The Second City won’t be playing second fiddle, geographically speaking, for the legions of security professionals who will travel here to partake in ASIS 2013. ASIS International’s 59th Annual Seminar & Exhibits will fill the halls of McCormick Place, located minutes from downtown Chicago, Sept. 24-27. More than 20,000 attendees from 90 countries are expected to join in a range of activities to help stay abreast of industry trends and best practices, as well as networking with peers and perusing the latest security products and services from 700 exhibitors.

“The world we live in is constantly changing — as are the threats we encounter.  Security professionals must continue to hone their skills in all areas and share lessons learned from both high profile incidents such as the Boston Marathon bombing and the common challenges we face every day such as data breaches. There is no better place to do that than at ASIS 2013,” says Geoff Craighead, CPP, president, ASIS.

More than 200 education sessions in 24 tracks will be presented along with pre-seminar programs. Among the curriculum is an expanded Systems Integrator track, which is geared to help installing security contractors better market their services and reinforce their value to current and prospective clients. This year the Electronic Security Association (ESA) and the Security Industry Association (SIA) have joined forces with ASIS to provide additional topics of interest to the channel. Also a first, ASIS is teaming with the International Association for Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) to deliver educational sessions focusing on health-care facility security.
Elsewhere, information security professionals can check out the co-located (ISC)² Security Congress, which will offer 80 sessions dedicated to cyber security. And those pursuing board certification through ASIS (CPP, PCI, PSP) can register for classroom review programs, which will be offered Sept. 22-23.

Keynote addresses are always a popular draw at ASIS. This year’s lineup features Apple Computer co-founder Steve Wozniak (Sept. 25, 8 a.m.); Australia’s former Prime Minister John Winston Howard (Sept. 26, 8 a.m.); and NFL icon Mike Ditka (Sept. 27, noon).

And here’s a quick glance at the General Sessions scheduled for Sept. 27:

  • 8 a.m. — International Policy Roundtable, “From Victims to Vigilantes: Cyber Security Strategies Going on the Offensive”
  • 9:30 a.m. — “Counterfeiting: From Potions and Lotions to Tractors and Turbines”
  • 11 a.m. — “The Security Professional As a Trusted Advisor,” highlighting ways for security professionals to work with the C-suite, as well as deal with territorial challenges

To assist attendees in organizing their schedules while at the event, an ASIS 2013 mobile app can be downloaded at asis2013.org. Also available on the Web site, ASIS Connect, an application to foster social networking while in Chicago. The app works with LinkedIn profiles to search registered attendees and exhibitors to connect before, during and after the show.
