Best of ISC West 2009, Volume 1

I wanted to share with you a few of the cool technologies and opportunities to be on the lookout for as a result of my meetings at ISC West 2009 in Las Vegas. This is the first of several summaries.

HONEYWELL SYSTEMS

Honeywell Systems revealed that it is taking the trepidation and guesswork out of offering remote managed access control by giving dealers what the company is calling a Playbook. As the familiar football jingle goes, Are you ready for some access? Senior Manager of Honeywell Access Systems John Smith told me how this guide will provide dealers with everything they need to begin offering remote managed access solutions including how to sell it, pricing models, sales tips, technical information, additional services to increase recurring monthly revenue and much more. I have long been sold on remote access but there was a missing piece preventing it from catching fire within the dealer community. Honeywell is smartly stepping forward to bridge this gap. The Playbook is expected to available early to mid-summer. John contributed an article on remote managed access to the March 2009 issue of SSI.

SAMSUNG | GVI SECURITY SOLUTIONS

I sat down with GVI Security Solutions CEO Steve Walin to discuss some exciting new technology and products from Samsung Electronics, including its A1 camera chip. He explained how the chip, which is expected to begin shipping in Samsung / GVI devices in late summer, will enhance image quality substantially and introduce video analytics into analog cameras. Analytics in analog devices? Who knew, right? Steve emphasized the continuing viability of analog cameras and their enduring dominance in the field, particularly with how economics are slowing the adoption of IP cameras. At the same time, he acknowledged the company was wisely keeping pace with converging technologies by unveiling three new IP cameras, including a megapixel model, high-speed DVRs and quick-install dome cameras. We also discussed the confusion in the marketplace concerning the Samsung name, which continues to be an ongonig issue but one Steve believes will eventually be resolved in his operation’s favor. I also attended a press conference in which Steve accepted a special plaque from a Samsung representative to commemorate GVI’s 10-year anniversary working with the Korean electronics giant.

TAMRON

Popped by the Tamron booth and received an impressive demo courtesy of Deputy General Manager Koji Masunari showing off the company’s latest lens technology breakthrough. He showed me a prototype of a 55x ultra-high magnification zoom lens equipped with an optical vibration compensation mechanism. I was very impressed to witness the clarity and power of the zoom as well as its ability to adjust to counteract even significant vibration that might occur due to strong winds, for example. What made it all even more impressive was its compact size allowing it to be used with small or standard size cameras to result in a very modest overall footprint. Applications examples include stadiums, large-scale amusement facilities, large-scale industrial complexes (oil plants, power plants, etc.), widespread facilities such as airports, harbors, etc., highway traffic monitoring and much more. The DF012 Model is scheduled to be widely available this fall.

What did you see at ISC West that knocked your socks off? I want to hear about it. Be sure to be on the lookout for more summations of what went down at the big show.

As always, thanks for reading,
