Dallas Police Department Rolls Out Body Camera Program

Effective Sept. 1, more than 70 Dallas police officers will be equipped with body cameras, which will record most officers’ interactions with people.

DALLAS – The Dallas Police Department officially rolled out is body camera program on Sept. 1, in select parts of the city.

Roughly 55 officers in the central patrol division have been issued body cameras, while 11 officers in the northeast patrol division received the devices. Another eight officers with multiple complaints against them will also get the cameras, regardless of patrol division, Dallas News reports.

The department will use the body cameras to record most officers’ interactions with people. At the end of their shift, officers will upload their video to a cloud-based storage system.

Videos that are not identified to be part of a criminal investigation will be deleted after 90 days.

Department officials said officers have been trained on the cameras’ use.

The DPD has roughly 3,500 officers. As many as 200 officers will get the first round of body cameras. Within the next five years, officials hope to rollout 1,000 devices to officers.

The incremental rollout is meant to make sure the city’s technology can handle the cameras, Dallas News reports.
