Downtown St. Louis to Receive 10 New Video Surveillance Cameras, LED Lighting

Six cameras were installed in May and have already led to arrests, according to Downtown STL, which footed the bill for the new cameras.

ST. LOUIS — More video surveillance cameras are coming to downtown St. Louis.

KMOV reports six new security cameras are already up and 10 more are on the way in an effort to improve public safety and help police make arrests in criminal cases. The 10 new cameras will be installed in January.

“There have been dozens of arrests since May since we put the first six cameras in,” said Missy Kelley with Downtown STL. “You’ve got a tool proven to lead to arrest and preventing crime.”

Six of the new cameras will feature license plate recognition software that will be able to track cars involved in a felony. LED lighting will also be a new safety feature downtown, which Kelley said will help the cameras have better visibility.

The cameras cost $100,000 and were paid for by Downtown STL, Inc. Fundraising for the LED lighting will take place in February.
