Ohio County Launches Surveillance Database to Solve Crimes

The Clark County Prosecutor’s Office is asking residents and business owners with video surveillance cameras to give officers access to private security feeds to help solve crimes.

CLARK COUNTY, Ohio – The Clark County Prosecutor’s Office has launched a voluntary video surveillance database to help law enforcement solve more crimes.

County officials are asking residents and business owners with video surveillance cameras to give officers access to private security camera feeds by voluntarily registering for the database online at the prosecutor’s office Web site, Dayton Daily News reports.

The prosecutor’s office got the idea to develop the digital database in 2013 when police investigated the death of a local resident. Surveillance cameras mounted outside a nearby business captured a car chasing and then running over the victim. Investigators then asked nearby homeowners if they had cameras.

One homeowner’s private security footage revealed an image of the suspect’s car, helping officers to locate the suspect, who later pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

The new database will use the information collected from camera owners to map the location of security cameras across the county, Dayton Daily News reports. Other information, such as a contact for the camera owner and what locations can be seen on the cameras, such as roadways, is also included.

Officials maintain that the database is secure and can only be accessed by law enforcement. They further stress that the database is not an invasion of privacy.

At least a dozen homeowners and businesses have signed up for the program already, according to county officials.
