Phone Company Error Causes Chaos for Wauwatosa, Wis., Couple
WAUWATOSA, Wis.—When police and fire officials showed up unexpectedly at a Wauwatosa home, the residing couple was perplexed. Neither of them had placed a call to either the police or fire departments. After this scenario occurred for the 10th time, everyone questioned how this could happen, especially when, at times, no one was even at the house to place the calls. Investigators first suspected a DSL glitch, a portable phone or maybe even someone tampering with phone lines located at the back of the house. However, it turned out to be either a typo in the phone company’s database or an inadvertent switch in the lines that was linking the couple’s phone line to a pay phone in Milwaukee.
