Prison Break: Inmates Escape from 2 Correctional Facilities
Authorities are reviewing security at Warren County Jail and Clinton Correctional Facility after inmates escaped the prisons.
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. and DANNEMORA, N.Y. – Prison security has taken center stage after inmates escaped from two correctional facilities.
Two inmates escaped Warren County Jail on June 1, after the duo manipulated a cell door lock and fled down a stairway, Iowa News reports.
The jailbreak occurred less than a week after the state jail inspector recommended the facility be abandoned due to security risks and the potential for escape.
In his report, the inspector noted that there was no monitored security in the stairway of the jail, posing a threat to both the public and to inmates by increasing the potential for an escape or for someone to enter the jail.
Police located Frank Manders, 26, walking along a gravel road on the same day as his escape.
It took authorities a little longer to locate his partner-in-crime Darian Crayton, 29. Police arrested the prisoner on June 7 after they found him at a gas station in a nearby town.

Meanwhile, police are searching for two inmates who escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison, in upstate New York.
Two convicted murderers – Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34 – escaped from the 3,000-inmate facility on June 6. The duo used power tools to cut through brick and metal walls and pipes before breaking through a manhole to freedom, NBC News reports.

Other inmates claimed they didn’t see or hear anything.
Investigators are looking into whether the duo had accomplices. Joyce Mitchell, who works in the prison tailor shop as an instructor, has been named as a person of interest and has been questioned. Both Matt and Sweat worked in the shop, and that appears to be how they made contact with Mitchell.
Police said Mitchell had a “case of nerves” and checked herself into the local hospital on the day of the escape, NBC News reports.
Investigators are also focusing attention on contractors who have been doing extensive renovations at the 170-year-old prison, The Chicago Tribune reports.
Officials said that so far, an inventory of the prison’s tools has been shown as missing. However, contractors often come into the facility with truckloads of equipment.
This is the second time that Matt has escaped from prison. In 1986, he escaped county jail by scaling a fence topped with razor wire.
New York State has offered a $100,000 reward leading to the convicts’ capture.
