San Bernardino Shootings, Other Violent Incidents Have Companies Concerned Over Workplace Security
Security companies’ phones are ringing ‘off the hook’ as businesses grow more concerned over security in response to wave of mass shootings.
The deadly shootings in San Bernardino, Calif., on Wednesday and other recent mass shootings have companies concerned about their workplace security.
Back in August, there was the fatal shooting of two news anchors during a live broadcast by a disgruntled former co-worker. This past Friday, there was the shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado that left three dead.
“I think it behooves anybody to take some sort of action at this point, whether that is reeducating your people on your safety programs or implementing them for the first time,” Edward Yost of the Society for Human Resource Management told the International Business Times. “To simply do nothing and believe you’re a low-risk environment, that’s not a legitimate way to look at it at this point. In this world we’re living in, nobody is a zero-risk environment.”
Fourteen people were killed Wednesday in San Bernardino at a holiday party for employees of the county health department where one of the shooting suspects worked.

Phones are ringing “off the hook” at Aegis Security & Investigations in Log Angeles in the aftermath of the San Bernardino shootings, said president and CEO Jeff Zisner. Companies are taking a second look at security systems that will arm their buildings against potential harmful incidents.
In Florida, Christopher Hagon, managing partner at Incident Management Group, said his international security firm has received numerous calls from companies and venues in the wake of the Paris attacks on Nov. 13 that left 130 people dead. “I think the most contacts we’ve got are literally in the last couple of weeks,” Hagon said. “We’ve been snowed under with calls.”
