Top 20 Technology Trends to Experience at ASIS 2015

Check out the most captivating technologies that will be on display in Anahem, Calif.

The 61st ASIS Seminar and Exhibits is the back end of the year’s grand stage for the latest and security greatest products and technologies to be shown, demonstrated and taken for a spin. With around 600 exhibit booths it can seem overwhelming. However, upon close inspection as much as half of them have little or no relevance for the majority of installing and monitoring security systems providers. This is because they are either non-electronic or are aimed at ASIS’ core membership and audience of commercial and industrial end users.

So then, from among the 300 or so that might be worth your time, 90% of them can be classified into 20 technology categories. So here is my take of what will be the most captivating technologies on display (in no particular order of importance) to help you keep score of what you see or as an FYI for those unable to attend:

1. Preconfigured Packages ― To better serve both integrators or more traditional security dealers that are not especially adept with IT network skills as well as simpler SMB customer deployments, many manufacturers will continue to offer complete off-the-shelf system solutions, also known as kits or packages.

2. Open to Interoperable Possibilities ― Many vendors’ booths will look like rainbows of logos showing off how their products are officially interoperable with an array of other technology providers. This is great for integrators as it eases assembling seamless integrations, even if the promise sometimes exceeds the field results. Open APIs and SDKs are seemingly available to all interested parties.

Products have become more affordable while features are added on.

3. Affordable Advanced Technologies ― It’s become the standard products cycle for prices to plummet while features increase, producing very compelling value propositions at the end-user level. Suppliers and integrators both must differentiate and add value to overcome the inevitability of such commoditization.

4. Video Views Access, Access Controls Video ― Several video surveillance manufacturers, particularly those with strong competencies in software development, are seizing additional opportunities on the access side. Expect to see more vendors jumping in and those that already have expanding their lines. And it is also going the other way, too, with access vendors introducing video platforms and features.
