Video Surveillance System Monitoring Oregon School No Longer Used by Sheriff’s Department

Sheriff Corey Falls prefers well-trained first responders over video surveillance system.

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. — A video surveillance security system that provides real-time surveillance inside a local elementary school to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department is no longer being used, the Mail Tribune reports.

Sheriff Corey Falls prefers to use well-trained first responders near the schools as opposed to the video surveillance system. Falls said the surveillance system required him to appoint one staff member to focus on one school rather than the approximate 20 schools the department is accountable for.

“I think you have to have well-trained deputies that are monitoring your schools in order to respond in a timely manner,” Falls said.

The sheriff’s department had a command center installed in 2013 that monitored Shady Cove, an elementary school. That was under then-Sheriff Mike Winters, who was unseated by Falls in 2014.

The school security system and command center was installed by Future Concepts, and the news of the shift in resources is disappointing for Lawrence Winslow, the company’s president and CEO.

“They were one of the first ones,” Winslow said of Jackson County. “This new sheriff doesn’t embrace technology.”
