Police in Charleston (S.C.) Adopt Voluntary Security Camera Registry
Benefits of the camera registration program include expediting retrieval of video footage, plus speeding up investigations and strengthening prosecutions.
CHARLESTON, S.C. — The police department here has launched a new community crime watch partnership program for people who are willing to register security cameras that are deployed at their home or business.
The voluntary program is intended to encourage residents and business owners within the city to register their video surveillance systems, which police say will increase safety and the reduction of crime, according to information recently released on the City of Charleston’s website.
The City of Charleston Security Camera Registration Program encompasses exterior facing security cameras. Police say the registration information will allow investigators to quickly locate video footage which may yield clues when crimes occur.
“This is an opportunity to use 21st century technology to build upon the traditional neighborhood crime watch programs,” states Police Chief Luther Reynolds.
Home and business owners can register their camera systems on the Police Department page on the City of Charleston’s Website at https://gis.charleston-sc.gov/register-security-cameras/.
All information will be kept confidential. Only law enforcement officers will view footage. The program does not give police the ability to tap into any home or business surveillance feeds, according to the CPD.
“Upon registration, a member of the Police Department will contact you to confirm the information,” CPD states. “Owners will only be contacted, via the information provided, and asked to assist, when investigators feel useful video footage may exist at their location. The effort is intended to speed up investigations and strengthen prosecution.”
