Lowering Video Storage Costs and Network Strain

Rapid advances in technology are driving the video surveillance industry into the arena of big data. Higher resolutions, higher frame rates, excellent dynamic ranges and better light sensitivity are key to capturing images that can distinguish individuals or objects for irrefutable evidence – whatever the time of day or night.

Yet the amount of data is getting larger by the minute. The volume of data being transported and stored has risen significantly, and the bandwidth demands this can put on the network and the increase in required storage capacity can add significantly to IP system costs. Therefore, it’s essential that video data is managed efficiently without compromising image quality or making it less relevant.

Reducing bitrate at the source

The best place to reduce these costs is at the source — in the camera. Quiet scenes with little or no movement require a lower bitrate. By intelligently distinguishing between noise and relevant information, such as movement, the camera can reduce bitrate substantially.

At Bosch, we use our expertise to deliver the most efficient bitrates with the lowest storage requirements and network strain — all without compromising the exceptional quality of our images. Our Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction technology combines spatial and temporal noise reduction with the ability to adjust them based upon light levels and identification of moving objects in a scene. This produces images with the least amount of noise, greatest amount of detail, and lowest bitrate. And our intelligent streaming capabilities minimize bitrate when no motion is present in a scene. When an important object is detected, bitrate increases to capture maximum detail.

Adding H.265 compression

While current generations of Bosch IP cameras feature Intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction, our newest generation of cameras launching this fall also add intelligent streaming and H.265 video encoding. Combined, these technologies can reduce bitrates by up to 80% depending on the scene. With our intelligent bitrate management techniques, we can significantly reduce storage costs, and lessen network strain by only using bandwidth when needed.
