MIPS 2021 Guides Integration Partners Into ‘Shaping the New Next’

Milestone CTO Bjørn Skou Eilertsen sketched a short-term view of the company’s technology path moving forward, along with the impacts of COVID-19, during a presentation that centered on new megatrends that he said will shape “the new next” in the security industry.

These four new megatrends (see slide) and the acceleration of emerging technology adoption in the past year, he explained, have placed video technology on the frontlines to create new demand and opportunity across the security industry and adjacent markets.

He said the underlying technology of physical security systems that have been used for surveillance, loss prevention and access control is now taking on new types of use cases. Examples include compliance with pandemic safety guidelines, protecting the health of employees and customers, and ultimately helping businesses reopen.

The concept of digital ethics was emphasized throughout MIPS 2021, as it is central to the company’s roadmap and culture. In 2017, Milestone joined more than 150 representatives from tech companies around the world in signing the Copenhagen Letter, a declaration that calls on tech companies to use technology in a responsible, human-centered way.

Technology creates value in every business domain, Eilertsen explained, and a portion of that value derives from the ethical use of technology — a topic of much discussion in business and society, as of late.

“Up until today, most of the conversation about ethics focuses on compliance and risk. In the upcoming years, digital innovation governance will be accelerated to become a license to operate versus being just another compliance and risk metric.

Our responsibility is to identify specific digital ethics issues and opportunities to turn awareness into action throughout the various business domains, to elevate the conversation by focusing on digital ethics as a source of business value, rather than simply focusing on compliance and risk, linking digital ethics to concrete business key performance indicators,” he said.
