Video Analytics Delivers ROI in Belt-Tightening Model

Similarly, a Porsche dealer in suburban Johannesburg, South Africa, is using video analytics with its existing CCTV platform to act as an early warning system if anyone breaches its 650-meter fence line. The analytics system also could be integrated with Porsche’s virtual private network, through which the company centrally monitors all of its dealerships.

At the Hertz car rental site at Israel’s Ben-Gurion International Airport, nearly $1 million in damage occurred yearly to cars through theft, vandalism and damage caused by people accessing restricted areas. While the Hertz location had various motion detection devices, cameras and fences in place, it wasn’t until it upgraded to an IP-based video surveillance system incorporating intelligent video cameras with built-in video analytics and intelligent encoders that the car rental company was able to successfully monitor its entire 20,000 square meter perimeter and building entrances after hours.

In addition to reducing acts of vandalism and theft, including some by employees, Hertz Israel’s video analytics system enabled the company to save money by hiring fewer night guards and reducing false alarms.

At a bus manufacturing facility, scrap metal thefts were resulting in more than $100,000 of annual losses. By deploying a surveillance system with video analytics, the company was able to prevent thefts while reducing staffing costs by 30 percent.

Getting the Most Out of Equipment
Companies also have the opportunity with analytics to reuse the technology as the location under surveillance changes, thus creating more bang for the buck. A construction company, for example, can set up and deploy at its current project cameras with analytic edge devices that are tied into a remote monitoring station. The station receives an alert when certain activities are detected, such as a person walking in a restricted area, and the central station can monitor the action while also announcing to the potential criminal that police are on the way. When that construction project is completed, the wireless cameras and analytic edge devices can be moved to the next site and a similar monitoring situation put into place.

Even if a company doesn’t want to eliminate its security guards when it deploys analytics, it can now reassign those guards to take a proactive approach based on the information provided by the analytics system. Instead of guards randomly patrolling various sites, hoping to come across a crime taking place, cameras equipped with analytics are programmed to detect various activities-someone climbing a fence, a car parked in a restricted area, a package left unattended-and send an alert to which the guard can respond. This can be especially important when the sites to be monitored are in remote areas, such as power plants or solar farms that allow for little or no on-site presence.

Instead of employing 24-hour, on-site security, these far-off sites with costly equipment or sensitive materials can now be monitored and personnel sent out as needed, with any suspect activities recorded for future identification purposes.

Analytics systems are also designed to provide notification when a camera is being tampered with or someone is trying to breach the system by other means, such as obscuring the lens or changing the camera’s view. By having this functionality, the system is less likely to be damaged and prevents costly replacement of parts or service calls.
