Video Mining Is Blowing Up

Here’s a thought: If this metadata contains information about speed and direction, couldn’t that information be translated into coordinates to be sent to a pan/tilt/zoon (p/t/z) camera?

Sure can, which is how automatic p/t/z tracking systems generally operate. Most p/t/z systems on the market today use a two-camera model. One is usually fixed, providing an overview of an area. This is the video image on which the analytics is performed.

Once the coordinates are gathered, they are translated into up/down/left/right commands and sent to the p/t/z camera. This coordinate information can also be sent to another computer and integrated into a mapping application like Google Earth, giving geolocation capabilities to more advanced systems. Not only can you see your target in the crosshairs of the p/t/z, but you can also track the movement on a computer-generated map.

Intelligent Video to Be More Precise

Some of what I’ve described above is readily available today. Some of it is just on the fringe of becoming that way. But there are still lots of amazing advances right around the corner.

Just after 9/11, facial recognition was a hot item. Unfortunately the technology didn’t work quite as expected, and never took off. That doesn’t mean there haven’t been advances. If you’ve been watching the consumer market lately, you’ve seen more cameras coming out with facial detection. This technology will rear its head again in the commercial video security industry, and will be better and more accurate than ever imagined.

More advanced analytics are in the works too. Being able to discern furtive glances and suspicious behavior are some of the projects being worked on. Look for more and more intelligent video systems on the market soon. These developments will simply
add more value to our projects, and really reap the benefits of an IP world.
