Speco Technologies Facilitates Covert Cameras and Capture

In its efforts to help integrators provide digital deterrence for customers, specialty cameras and lockbox recorders offer solutions at ISC West.

LAS VEGAS — It’s tough for vandals to destroy surveillance equipment if they can’t find it. That was part of Speco Technologies’ game plan for integrators to provide what they refer to as “digital deterrent technology” to customers so they need not worry about smashed and spray-painted cameras and recording gear by potential intruders.

The Amityville, N.Y., company had some slick little solutions on hand at ISC West with that in mind, including specialty cameras and an innovative DVR/NVR installation solution.

“Our thing is digital deterrent technology, we want to stop crime before it happens,” says Speco’s director of marketing and communications, Laura Mastroberti.

To aid in covert camera installation, Speco had on hand its new O2MT61 Full HD 1080p 2-megapixel Outdoor/Indoor Mini Dome/Turret IP Camera. It’s a golf-ball size, 3.7mm lens camera that comes in black or white and is able to have the miniature, concealable form factor while still providing full HD resolution thanks to Speco’s implementation of a separate encoder unit.

The encoder, which can be placed in a box for outdoor usage, links between the camera and recording device and can be installed up to 20 feet away from the O2MT61. The separate units aid in installation placement flexibility and ease of setup, the company says. The combo features built-in PoE, WDR and two-way audio communication.

Speco had the cameras showcased with WNS Plug-and-Play Wall-Mount NVR with Built-in PoE and Monitor that the company featured in an innovative form factor – all the parts pieced together inside of a common lockbox (without the cover for display purposes). The NVR has all the easy, or “EZ” installation and usage features of the DVRs/NVRs that Speco was presenting in brief training sessions for booth attendees, such as EZ camera setup, EZ network setup, EZ search, EZ copy and more.

But the lockbox façade provides a layer of protection against vandals who can’t find the capture device under lock and key, or simply won’t know it’s inside there in the first place as it blends in with other items in an electrical room, for instance. “We can customize these to put an installer’s logo on the box, or maybe put on a ‘warning high-voltage’ sign so people think it’s something else,” says Mastroberti.

On top of that, the camera and NVR two-way audio functionality can add yet another layer of deterrence with something like the speaker horn Speco also had on display. Surveillance triggers can signal messages to sound so that when someone is detected they might hear “Warning, you are under surveillance!” or even non-threat messages like telling the FedEx deliveryman where to place a package when he comes into view.

“You can use as proactive messages, just to give somebody that ‘we see you’ feeling,” says Mastroberti.
