NFPA and WFCA Unite in Quest for Harmonized Fire Codes

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) have signed an agreement to jointly develop a harmonized fire code that integrates NFPA 1, Fire Prevention Code(r), and the Uniform Fire Code, the two most widely adopted fire codes in the country.

“For more than 100 years, NFPA has worked to find new ways to reduce the public’s risk to fire,” says NFPA President and CEO George D. Miller. “Collaborating with WFCA is the latest such effort, and serves as an ideal opportunity for both organizations to promote fire and life safety worldwide.”

Under the agreement, NFPA and WFCA will work together on creating ANSI-compliant fire codes based on the UFC and FPC. The agreement calls for WFCA and NFPA to jointly develop a harmonized fire code for release in 2003 using the NFPA/ANSI open consensus process.

“By combining the strengths of our respective codes and organizations, I believe that WFCA and NFPA will not only satisfy the needs of the public, but also those of fire officials who rely on state-of-the-art fire codes to implement a high level of safety in their jurisdictions,” says WFCA President Jim Rankin.
