High-End Solution Satisfies Higher Ed Requirements

The University of Kentucky is investing $5 million to renovate decades-old standalone legacy systems. A unified security management platform serves as the linchpin, tying together video surveillance, access control credentials and emergency call stations into a centralized security system. Find out how the integrator is leading a highly coordinated project to make it all happen.

Layering in Early Warning Communications

Missing from the University of Kentucky’s security measures prior to its recent renovation were robust campus-wide public address capabilities. That shortcoming has been resolved with the addition of about 25 Talk-A-Phone emergency call stations.

The units include a pan/tilt/zoom dome camera mounted to a camera arm above the tower, which can be activated through the emergency phone. Concealed high-power speakers provide 360º coverage. The university uses an emergency notification solution by InformaCast to reach an unlimited number of phones with text and live or pre-recorded audio messages. Notifications can be sent to a wide variety of endpoint devices to reach students, faculty, staff and visitors with life-safety information.

The towers are IP-based and tied into the university’s IP phone system, explains Brad Pyles, vice president of business development for Advanced Digital Solutions, a systems integrator contracted with the university.

“The emergency call towers are integrated into the InformaCast system so you can not only make an emergency call and get positions from that, but you can also send out an emergency notification announcement at 120dBs at 300 feet,” he says.
