ASIS Awards Elementary School $20K to Update Surveillance Systems
ORLANDO, Fla. — Now in its eighth year, the ASIS Int’l School Security Funding Competition awarded $20,000 to Palmetto Elementary School for security improvements. The school will use the money to update surveillance systems.
As part of the Orange County Public School (OCPS) District in Orlando, Fla., the school is in one of the city’s highest crime-rated areas.
“This is a way of giving back to the community where our annual seminar and exhibits is held,” says ASIS Int’l CEO Michael Stack. “The aim of the competition is to encourage local schools to assess the security issues that confront their buildings, staff and students every day.”
Participants were schools within the Orlando, Fla.-based Orange County Public School (OCPS) District. Each school submitted essays explaining their security concerns and how those worries might impact students, teachers and administrators. Entrants described security risks they would try to reduce and listed specific security upgrades they would purchase with the funding. Members of the ASIS Greater Orlando Chapter judged the submissions.
Palmetto Elementary is one of 120 elementary schools in the OCPS – the 10th largest district in the nation. Located in a high crime area, the school serves 1,150 students, the school plans to add indoor and outdoor surveillance cameras to act as a deterrent for would-be offenders. Officials will also use the cameras to identify those who commit crimes on the campus.
“We are thrilled that we were selected by ASIS as the top choice in their school funding competition,” says Palmetto Elementary Principal Katie Boyd.
ASIS will host the 57th Annual Seminar and Exhibits (ASIS 2011) Sept. 19-22 in Orlando, Fla. The organization will recognize Palmetto Elementary during an awards luncheon on Sept. 22 at the Orange County Convention Center.
