Report: IT Managers More Involved In Physical Security Decisions

ALEXANDRIA, Va.

More than 75 percent of the integrators and installers of IP-based security products are working with IT managers compared to a year ago, according to a new report sponsored by the Security Industry Association (SIA).

The survey, conducted by IMS Research, also discovered that three out of five IT managers are involved in physical security purchase decisions.

According SIA Director of Research Mark Visbal, the findings confirm how much physical security is now converging with IT.

“A few years ago, they were different worlds. Now, in many cases, it’s difficult, if not impossible, to separate one from the other,” Visbal says.

There are two driving factors behind the shift, says SSI “Convergence Channel” columnist Steve Payne.

“The first is that more and more equipment is using the network, and being seen as just another appliance by the IT staff,” he says. “The other – and I think a more important factor – is that already tight budgets are being shifted to IT from other departments, including security.”

According to Payne, as more systems converge on the network, more money is going to be following that shift.
