Salto Helps Technology Firm Enhance Access Control

Developed in 2005 by MRA Group, a leading Pennsylvania-based real estate advisory and development firm, Breingsville, Pa.-based TEK Park has emerged as the most advanced and comprehensive technology campus in the Mid-Atlantic region. Comprised of more than 508,000 square feet on 137 acres, features a diverse population of tenants in a variety of industries, including disaster recovery, bio-pharma, technology and more.

Formerly occupied by AT&T and technology firm Lucent Technologies, the multi-tenant facility now serves as a branch for Cyoptics, a manufacturer of indium phosphide (InP) optical chip and integrated component technologies for the data communications and telecommunications markets. The company occupies three floors in TEK Park that are primarily dedicated to research and development, and manufacturing, including a complete semiconductor wafer lab, lasers and detectors.

Cyoptics secured the space at the converted campus, with the knowledge that that the building was not set to separate the numerous tenants and secure the office space required for Cyoptics staff. But the firm ran into a slight glitch when the facility’s access control system was incapable of securing Cyoptics’ needs.

The company thus sought to install a hard-wired access control solution to its portion of TEK Park that could piggyback on the building’s existing security system. However, after much research, Cyoptics determined that installing a hard-wired solution would be too costly, as it would involve an extensive amount of wire, cable and interface modules. Before initiating such a major investment, Cyoptics formed a panel of executives to investigate an access control system, which would use radio frequency (RF) locks instead. The first beta system test, however, failed to meet the firm’s expectations.

The panel then contacted Hogan Security Group of Pennington, N.J., which recommended Cyoptics install the SALTO wireless access control system. When the tests from Hogan Security proved successful, Cyoptics authorized an access control system from SALTO Systems.

The solution delivers real-time high security with the convenience of battery operated access control. The system was overlaid onto the top of a mix of existing doors and 15 new doors with all hardware compatible.

The new system provides a series of security innovations, allowing doors to open automatically during normal business hours and locking at days end. Work-late commission is granted to certain employees so management and engineering teams can be confident that conference rooms are open late or early whenever a meeting is scheduled.

The arrangement is ideal because all conference rooms open into the building’s common space. All employees at the site have access to work areas, but only select individuals have permission to visit executive and conference areas.

The installation was completed in two phases: hardware for existing doors; then the SALTO locks were retrofitted onto existing doors. The second phase included existing doors and seven elevators.
