New Huntington Beach Security System Is ‘Difference Between a Smart Phone and Flip Phone’

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — The San Bernardino shootings back in December struck a chord with the Huntington Beach Police Department. They knew there were flaws with their security system around the city, and after a catastrophic incident that left 14 dead and 22 injured, it was time to start looking for an upgrade.
On Monday, they got what they were hoping for. The Huntington Beach City Council unanimously approved a new video surveillance system that will allow the department to access live-camera feeds, the Los Angeles Times reported. In the past, they only could watch surveillance footage after the fact.
“This new system versus the old system is night and day,” said Police Chief Robert Handy. “It’s basically the difference between having a smart phone and a flip phone.”
The new surveillance system has 158 cameras and the CelPlan cost $431,400.
Handy says the city will start installing the new system immediately and will have it up and running within the next month, according to the report.
