Washington, D.C. Launches Program Offering Rebates for Installing Surveillance Cameras

Police officers will be able to request video footage from cameras located within the vicinity of a crime that is being investigated.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The nation’s capital officially launched the Private Security Camera Incentive Program on Wednesday, which provides rebates for the purchase, installation and registration of a security camera system on the exterior of a residence, business, nonprofit or religious institution.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser made the announcement of the program, which was launched with the help of Michelle M. Garcia, the new director of the Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants.

“The installation of private security cameras in the city is another step to deter crime and assist police during investigations,” said Mayor Bowser. “This innovative rebate program helps equip residents, small businesses, nonprofits and religious institutions with the tools they need to help prevent crime and identify suspects.”

The program was first introduced back in September as part of Mayor Bowser’s “Safer, Stronger DC” public safety plan.

Once cameras are registered with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), officers will be able to request access to the video footage captured on the surveillance cameras when investigating a crime within the vicinity of the camera. MPD will not have access to live video streams.
