Alarms R Us’ initial burglary system installation at Sunset Industrial Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., some

Throughout an approximate period of 10 years, Sunset Industrial Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., has undergone transformations in its size and resident clientele. Presently, the 20-plus-acre park is comprised of about 40 tenants. Some of the buildings are offices, but most buildings are mainly for distribution or warehouse purposes for reputable high-profile companies, such as Federal Express, Motorola and Pepsi.

As the park has grown in size, as well as in the number of visitors it receives each day, so has its need for increased security measures. Within those 10 years, the park owners have hired Alarms R Us of Brooklyn to install burglar alarms, CCTV equipment and, most recently, fire alarm equipment. With millions of dollars worth of goods and services there, it became essential to have security equipment other than the park’s 24-hour guard service located at the entrance. What started out as the need for only an upgraded burglar alarm system turned into CCTV protection and, finally, fire protection equipment—in this case, manufactured by Fire-Lite of Northford, Conn.

Working Relationship, Installation Spans 10-Year Period

The need for better security by the owners of Sunset Industrial Park came about when some problems arose with vandals who had entered into the enclosed park. Also, the fire equipment installed back then had too many false alarm problems. It was at that time that one of the owners met Mike Mascarini, who was working for a security manufacturing company and, shortly thereafter, left the company to start his own business, Alarms R Us.

Park’s Vulnerable Spots Were Areas of Concern

With high-profile tenants at Sunset Industrial Park, each building has some form of security protection. The park is comprised of standalone buildings and clusters of buildings, and is enclosed by a steel fence. The owners not only wanted to protect the park from the inside, but also the park’s outer surroundings.

Burglary System Gets Extra Eyes With CCTV

With vandal acts that occurred in the industrial park, the owners’ main concern was having a reliable burglar system. Beginning about 10 years ago, Alarms R Us installed door contacts throughout all building clusters, including motion detectors strategically located everywhere in the buildings. The alarm keypad was placed in the guard booth located in the park’s main entrance. An audible sounder and phone-line backup is also part of the system.

Fire Protection Seals the Park’s Security Deal

The owners’ final request for enhanced security was fire protection. Mascarini chose to install equipment manufactured by Fire-Lite. He used two Fire-Watch 411 UDAC digital alarm communicator transmitters for monitoring the sprinkler systems in standalone, single and double-bay buildings, and three Fire Warden MS-9200 addressable fire alarm control panels.

Park’s Security System Helps Reduce Crime Levels

Since the entire security and fire protection systems were installed during a 10-year period, Mascarini contends that the total cost of the equipment is at least $150,000. He adds that the equipment has helped crack down on vandalism in the park. In the end, the owners seemed pleased with Alarms R Us’ entire installation.
