Unusual Sound Characteristics Helps People Find Exit Points
The ExitPoint sounder by System Sensor of St. Charles, Ill., uses directional sound to help occupants identify exit points when trying to escape a burning building. This new evacuation concept is meant to complement traditional methods of notification. When used in conjunction with conventional notification appliances, the ExitPoint draws people to exits even when the way is obscured by smoke. The power of the technology is easily seen in structures that rapidly fill with smoke from a fire.
The directional sound method of evacuation relies on a broadband, multifrequency low-, mid- and high range audible signal. According to System Sensor, because of the unusual characteristics of the emitted sound, the human ear can easily locate the sound source even when the environment is dark and smoke laden.
