Cameras Credited With 80% Drop in Crime in Dallas Neighborhood
DALLAS
Dallas Police says dispatch calls in the Richland Park Estates area have fallen by nearly 80 percent since public surveillance cameras were installed last February. Dallas authorities say calls dropped from an average of 2.3 per week to 0.5 after the cameras were installed.
“It has reduced crime by almost 80 percent in our area and that’s a very positive movement in the right direction” says Dick Becker, president of the residential community’s homeowner’s association.
Not only has the addition of cameras brought about a reduction in crime in the immediate vicinity, according to Dallas police it also resulted in a drop in calls in an adjacent neighborhood, while calls in two neighborhoods south of Richland Park Estates have increased or held steady.
“When the PD targeted that area, in one month’s time we cut burglaries in half,” says Sergeant Rector McCollum of the Dallas Police Department’s northeast division.
Currently, Dallas Police are using two surveillance videos to prosecute suspects for vandalism and attempted burglary. Future plans call for additional cameras in the Richland Park Estates area.
